CAF Competition preview – Chiefs, Pirates to put on a show

The stage is set for a defining weekend in African football as Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs return to continental duty in the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup respectively. For both Soweto giants, this weekend is about restoring pride and momentum.

Orlando Pirates vs Saint-Éloi Lupopo

After a shock 3–0 loss in Lubumbashi, Orlando Pirates return home with it all to do. Betway have the Buccaneers as heavy favourites at 1.24 for a win, with a draw priced at 5.41 and a Lupopo upset sitting at 9.87.

On the Omni Soweto Derby powered by Africapicks, former Pirates winger Sifiso Myeni believes the comeback starts at Orlando Stadium. “My Pirates go into this weekend with belief. They’ve built a culture of chance-creation and speed. At home, I expect them to dominate possession and exploit the flanks,” he said. Myeni added that the team’s strength lies in the fullbacks’ overlap and the midfield’s forward movement, the same dynamic that has powered their best football this season.

Pirates’ attacking quartet of Appolis, Maswanganyi, Mofokeng, and Makgopa have combined for more chances than any other front line in their CAF campaign, with Maswanganyi averaging 2.8 key passes per match. Myeni predicts a confident 2–0 win, backing the hosts to win to nil and progress comfortably.

Kaizer Chiefs vs AS Simba

Kaizer Chiefs enter their second-leg clash after a goalless draw at AS Simba. Returning to South Africa, Betway list Chiefs at 2.30 to win, a draw at 3.00, and AS Simba also at 3.00.

Thuso Phala, a Chiefs legend, expects a tight contest. “They’ve had chances but still lack that spark,” he said. “If they trust their number 10 and overlap, the chances will come.” Phala believes Mduduzi Shabalala’s creativity and Castillo’s set-piece delivery will be crucial to unlocking a compact Simba defence. His prediction: a narrow 1–0 win for Chiefs.

Phala concluded: “Football is still a game of moments, not just stats.” And for South Africa’s giants, those moments this weekend could redefine their continental campaigns.
