Africa’s road to the 2026 World Cup has become a gripping sprint. With several teams already through, many scrapping for one of the last spots, and a few eliminated, the final weeks will deliver decisive drama.
How African Qualification Works:
In CAF’s format, the continent is split into nine groups. Each group winner earns direct entry to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Meanwhile, the four best runners-up (across all groups) enter a playoff round for a chance to advance to an inter-confederation playoff. The expanded World Cup format means Africa will contribute nine direct qualifiers plus potential additional places via playoffs.
Qualified:
Morocco became the first African nation to clinch qualification after a 5–0 win over Niger. Tunisia followed later, securing their berth with a 1–0 winner against Equatorial Guinea in stoppage time.
Meanwhile, Egypt booked their qualification with a commanding 3–0 win over Djibouti, creating an irreducible lead at the top of Group A. Algeria became the latest team to qualify following a 3-0 win against Somalia.
Still Fighting:
Many groups are locked in close competition. In Group A, Burkina Faso is holding down second spot. Group B sees Senegal ahead with DR Congo pressing hard behind them.
Group C remains dramatic: Benin lead but South Africa, Nigeria and Rwanda still have paths, though South Africa’s three-point deduction for fielding Teboho Mokoena illegally has made their journey harder. Group D has Cape Verde striving for their first-ever ticket, with Cameroon on their tail.
In Group E, Niger, Tanzania and Zambia are fighting for second spot. In Group F, Ivory Coast lead a tight group with Gabon just behind.. Group G puts Algeria ahead with challengers Uganda and Mozambique behind them. Group I finds Ghana in front, trying to fend off rivals Madagascar.
Out or Almost Out:
Some teams have no realistic route left. In Group A, Sierra Leone, Guinea Bissau, Ethiopia and Djibouti are out. In Group B, Togo, Mauritania and South Sudan have no chance at progressing.
In Group C Zimbabwe and Lesotho trail too far behind, while Nigeria’s form has faltered at key moments, damaging their chances. In Group D Angola, Mauritius and Swaziland are out. In Group E Congo and Eritrea have been eliminated from the running.
In Group F, Benni McCarthy’s Kenya, Gambia, Burundi and the Seychelles have no chance. In Group G, Botswana and Somalia are out of the running. In Group H Sao Tome and Principe are the only side that have no chance at qualification while in Group I, Mali, Comoros, Central African Republic and Chad are eliminated.
